Silent reading is a reading skill that allows one to read without voicing the words. This may involve subvocalization or silent speech, which is defined as the internal speech made when reading a word, thus allowing the reader to imagine the sound of the word as it is read.
silent reading importance
Silent reading improves students' understanding because it helps them concentrate on reading rather than pronunciation. This practice also allows children to read faster and improve comprehension. Silent reading also helps develop reading skills for a purpose, as the focus is on understanding the content.
While there are arguments for and against Sustained Silent Reading and the development it has on students’ literacy levels, I have my reasons why I think it is important to include it in the classroom.
1. It gives students a chance to read without distractions from Snapchat, Facebook, and Instagram.
2. It can pique a student's interest in reading as a hobby.
3. It gives students a chance to pick their own material to read.
This would benefit the English classroom because it allows students, who may find difficulty motivating their selves to read, to exercise their choice of reading.
